After the Armistice

December 22, 1918

Excerpts from the diary of Green Howards soldier, Stanley Harrison, spanning Armistice day 1918 to the first peacetime Christmas for four years.

Mon. Dec 22nd Finished canteen. Made nice cosy place and create a writing desk. Working from 8 am to 8 pm. Scrounged an electric bulb and fittings. Wally helped me to connect up etc. but find that when other lights were switched off at “Lights Out” that “our” light comes on. I was very surprised as I was under impression men for an NCO’s job in our platoon recommended for a stripe. Not that I am jealous. Would not have one as a Xmas gift. Supper of peaches, biscuits, Oxo. Making our bunk look OK.
