Museum at 50

2023: Museum at 50. The golden anniversary of the museum being at home at the heart of Richmond.

The museum first opened its doors in 1973. Ever since, we’ve been caring for one of the finest collections of its type in the country, and welcoming visitors to this very special place.

what’s being done to mark the museum’s 50th anniversary?

In 2023 we’ve launched a three year project to deliver a programme of enhancements to one of the museum’s much loved spaces, The Normanby Room.

2023: fundraising | 2024: fundraising and enhancement works | 2025: completion and special exhibition

Prior to the museum’s last major refurbishment in 2014, The Normanby Room was off-limits to visitors. Now an enchanting display gallery and event venue, the room exudes its own very special appeal. It’s filled with glistening silver, art and our extensive collection of Mousey Thompson furniture, purchased by the Officers’ and Sergeants’ Messes during the inter-war years, and in use ever since.

We’re trying to raise almost £40,000 to implement our plans for The Normanby Room, which include:
• restoration of the Mouseman furniture
• repair and refurbishment of the leaded glazing
• structural and masonry repairs, with associated redecoration
• replacement flooring
• improved museum-standard lighting scheme
• additional artwork installation
• additional object interpretation
• modern AV provision
