As the re-opening of our Medal Room approaches, we’ve welcomed back our Victoria and George Cross collection into the museum.
The precious medals have been stored safely off-site whilst redevelopment work has been taking place, but they’re now back where they belong, ready to take pride of place in their new gallery area.
Museum staff and volunteers took the opportunity to get up close to the 14 Victoria Crosses and two George Crosses before they are specially mounted and placed into their display cases.
The new gallery space, which received National Lottery Heritage Fund support, is part of the wider Medal Room Improvement Project which has seen the Medal Room transformed to include more medals on display, and more information and personal stories about the men who were awarded them during the regiment’s long history.
An official opening and private reception for relatives of Victoria Cross recipients and the museum volunteers who have polished and re-mounted thousands of medals is being held on Sunday afternoon.
The new Medal Room will be open to museum visitors from Monday 13 May.
