Tandey Discovery Day at the Green Howards Museum

The Tandey Discovery Day at the museum was a great success, as attendees were captivated by the chance to delve deeper into the remarkable life of Private Henry Tandey, the World War I hero who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his acts of incredible bravery.

Held on October 30th to coincide with the 107th anniversary of the Second Battle of Passchendaele, the event provided a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts to engage directly with Tandey’s legacy through a multifaceted program of activities. The day commenced with an insightful talk that shed light on Tandey’s service with the 2nd, 9th and 12th Battalions, offering attendees a vivid glimpse into the trials and tribulations he faced on the frontlines. The experience was further enriched by a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the broader historical context. There was also a group handling session of objects belonging to Tandey from the museum’s collection. The undoubted highlight, however, was the opportunity to view and handle Tandey’s coveted Victoria Cross medal and other military honours, like the Military Cross, and the Distinguished Conduct medal –  a rare and privileged encounter that left all in attendance with a profound appreciation for his unwavering courage and selfless sacrifice.

By the end of the day, it was clear that the Tandey Discovery Day had been an overwhelming success, leaving the participants with a deeper understanding and newfound admiration for this remarkable World War I hero.
