Service Children’s Champions Festival of Remembrance 2024

The Green Howards Museum was proud to be part of the ‘Ripon Festival of Remembrance’ project, which was led by Service Children’s Champion; Angela Campbell. The museum hosted a series of workshops aimed at engaging the children of service families.

Primary school children from 18 schools across North Yorkshire visited the museum for interactive object handling sessions where they were given the opportunity to physically examine and touch various historical artefacts from the museum’s collection. By using their sense of touch, the students were encouraged to identify the purpose and function of these objects, and well as gain insight into how soldiers would have used them. These tactile experiences helped to solidify students’ learning and foster a deeper understanding of those who fought in the wars.

Each participating school adopted a local soldier who served during World War One or World War Two.  Secondary school students conducted in-depth research into the lives of  local soldiers. The students delved into historical records and personal accounts to uncover detailed information and compelling stories about the brave service members. Their research was presented to Primary schools along with a framed photograph of the soldier.

Each school brought their adopted soldier to the ‘Festival of Remembrance’ at Ripon Cathedral placing their soldiers photograph there to remember them.
