Pay What You Think

We’re open on Sundays throughout August and September – with two FREE entry days part of our ‘Summer Sundays’ promotion.

We are waiving our usual £5 entry fee on the 18th and 25th of August. Instead, visitors are being invited to look round in return for a donation.

“We are an independent museum and wouldn’t be able to stay open without the income generated from admissions throughout the year,” explains Director, Lynda Powell. “However, it’s really important to us to encourage everyone to come and see our fabulous collection, so these two ‘pay what you think’ Sundays are a great way of sharing it.”

As well as the permanent galleries, which tell the 300 year story of friendship and adventure, service and sacrifice, visitors will also see the recently re-developed Medal Room plus the intriguing new special exhibition; Hostile Environment, which reveals the little-known events surrounding the deployment of thousands of troops to fight in the Russian Civil War in 1918.

As if that’s not enough, the museum is also running a Pop Up Mess in the stunning surroundings of its Normanby Room, with its extensive collection of Mousey Thompson furniture. Tea, coffee, cakes and savouries will be on sale, raising funds for the museum.

“We’re very lucky to have some very skilled cooks amongst our museum volunteers, who are providing delicious baked goods to tempt visitors,” adds Lynda. “Our friends at the Veterans Artisan Bakery are also getting involved – and we know from past experience that their chocolate brownies are worth the visit in themselves!”
