A note on the letters. The transcripts may include abbreviations or spelling inconsistencies and errors. We have chosen to transcribe the letters as they appear so that they are an accurate reflection of John Oldfield’s style and personality. We have also included his original page numbering. My dear mum, Daddy and Jumbo.
Thank you so much for all your letters, lines and cables. I have done wonderfully well lately and have been collecting three and four a day. It is so nice to have news of you all again. To hear Richard is well and safe, & staying in England and Derry away, poor old Jumbo it’s too bad but you have been luckier than most, I’m glad to hear your Bun is doing so well and 13 Ibs of “fudge” . You ask in your last airgraph how many parcels I’ve had – THREE now – one with cakes, braces, pencil etc. one with three cakes and pipes received the other day and are with the book from your Daddy, so that is right, isn’t it ? Thank you all again so much for them, they have been welcome. I am feeling very fit and expect to return to the Regiment on April. Godbless and love to you all, Johnnie
