William Henry Charles Harfield joined the Green Howards in March 1872 when he was just 12 years old.

By 1881 William had reached the rank of Colour Sergeant, an unusually rapid rise through the ranks. He served in Egypt from 1884 to 1886.

On his return to England he was discharged and joined the Civil Service as an Attendant at Broadmoor Asylum; a post he held for 35 years until his retirement in 1920.

William’s son, Private Frederick Augustus George Harfield also joined the regiment.

Frederick was killed on 29th October 1914 when serving with ‘D’ Company of the 2nd Battalion.

William died, age 90 in 1949. The Green Howards Gazette reported, “The many and beautiful floral tributes, including one from the Regiment, paid testimony to the respect in which Mr Harfield was held by his many friends and comrades.”
