Vernus Sanders

After service in the ranks with the Sherwood Foresters at Ypres, Gallipoli, where he was wounded and the Somme, Vernus Frederick Bernard Sanders was commissioned into The Yorkshire Regiment (as the Green Howards were called at the time) because of his ‘distinguished conduct in the field’. This was known as a battlefield commission.

Sanders went on to take part in the fighting at Arras and Ypres in 1917. He was given the honour of carrying the Regimental flag in the Victory march through Paris on the 14th July and through London on the 19th July 1919. He went on to serve in India between the wars and retired in 1930.

Lieutenant Colonel BV Ramsden OBE. remembered this of Sanders in an excerpt from the March 1964 Green Howards Gazette:

Though he served originally in the Sherwood Foresters, he became a thoroughly indoctrinated Green Howard. It is hard to imagine the Army of the future producing ‘Sandy’s; he will remain a great example of the old Army…
