Clasp: Afghanistan North West Frontier 1919
Born in Essex, William Clark enlisted in 1907 aged 19 years and 10 months. The Enlistment Register records him as being 5 feet 4 inches tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
His occupation prior to enlistment was a kitchen porter. Clark served with the 1st Battalion during the Third Afghan War of 1919. It was a conflict which largely consisted of patrolling local villages, driving off enemy insurgents, dealing with snipers and attempting to stave off the effects of heat, disease and boredom.
By the time William was awarded his North-West Frontier medal in 1920 he was still serving in Green Howards but with the newly issued number 4379103.
