We know our visitors love the Medal Room, and how it makes you feel…
“When I walked into the Medal Room, I stood there and simply said wow”
You’ve told us it’s ‘spectacular…awesome…incredible…amazing and stunning’, and that’s great – we feel exactly the same, BUT we’ve got big plans to make the Medal Room even better!
However, we’ve realised that once you get over the visual impact and the emotional response to this marvellous place, there’s not much more visitors can gain from the experience, and we think that’s a real shame.
So, we’re putting plans in place to improve the information available within the Medal Room so you can find out more about the medals themselves, and the people who earned them.
Put more medals on show, and give greater access to the medals in our collection
Improve the Victoria Cross and George Cross displays
Help you understand the different types of medals, and what you had to do to get one
Tell the stories of more medal holders
We’re targeting all our fundraising efforts on this project for the rest of the year, and into 2019.
Any event you attend, admission ticket you purchase, gift you buy in the shop, or donation you make, will help us add this much needed helping of ‘know how’ to the existing WOW in the room.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to improve this much loved space.
If all our fundraising goes according to plan, the new-look Medal Room will reopen in May 2019. It seems fitting that this refreshed space should be completed during the 75th anniversary of the only Victoria Cross to be awarded on D Day – to Green Howards soldier, CSM Stanley Hollis.
Your donation will help us make the Medal Room even more amazing.
If you are a UK tax payer and would like us to be able to claim Gift Aid on your donation (at no additional cost to you), please call us on 01748 826561 to provide the information we need to be able to claim the Gift Aid.
Planning a visit in April 2019? Please be aware that we will be working to implement some of our improvements at this time. The Medal Room and Normanby Room will be closed to museum visitors from 1 April to 12 April, so, if you are planning a special visit, please do contact us so we can let you know exactly what the situation is at that time. We will try to complete the work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.
