International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

6th April 2026 marks International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.  The theme this year is: “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” highlighting the unique ability sport has to foster connection, inclusion, and peace in an increasingly fragmented world.

Sport provides a universal language that transcends cultural, social, and boundaries. A wonderful example of this can be viewed within the Green Howards Museum Collection.

The Afghanistan Football football was used during a match between a team from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) managed by England and Tottenham Hotspur’s Gary Mabbutt, and a Kabul United team, managed by Southampton FA Cup winning manager, Lawrie McMenemy. The match was played in the Kabul Olympic stadium on 15th February 2002, with the ISAF side winning 3 – 1 and some of those who took part signed the ball.

Our special exhibition throughout 2026 titled  ‘Battle Bowlers and Football Boots’ shares the stories of how football connected teams, individuals and countries through the history of the Regiment.

Book your tickets now! We look forward to sharing these stories with you.
