War Games: Operation Overlord

Sat, 6 June 2026 10:00 - 2:30

On the anniversary of D-Day, Saturday 6th June, the Green Howards museum will be hosting a day of war gaming, in the museums grand Normanby Room. The day’s action will be made up of 3 gaming tables. The first table will look at the 6th Battalion of the Green Howards and its role in the landings on Gold Beach and the fight inland to the village of Crepon. It will battle-game the advance testing the choices made at the time.

The second and third tables will focus much more on the action around the Fleury Battery in the village of Ver-sur-Mer, the location of the first action for which CSM Stan Hollis won the only Victoria Cross at the Normandy landings.  It will look in detail at Hollis capture of the pillboxes supporting the bunker and, intriguingly, it will ‘replay’ the scenario had Hollis not intervened, a chance for us all to appreciate the impact of the actions of one individual at a critical point in the whole Normandy landings. So, a chance to explore the ‘what if’ school of history.

And you can play a part. Visitors can become part of the game by playing any one of a number of roles.  If you want to experience the tension and tough choices faced by men like Hollis, come along.

Booking in advance is highly recommended for all of the packages available on the day whether you want full game time or simply the chance to have a go.
