SPECIAL EXHIBITION: D-DAY

Mon, 6 May 2024 - Fri, 20 December 2024

The ONLY Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day: 6 June 1944 was earned by a Green Howards soldier, Company Sergeant Major Stan Hollis.

Our special exhibition, in this, the 80th anniversary year of that momentous event tells the story of the The Green Howards who were part of the Normandy campaign.

Almost 2000 men from the regiment experienced setting foot on French soil for the first time since the defeat at Dunkirk four years previously. The tide had turned.

It was more than one day. It was more than one man.

Our D-Day exhibition introduces you to the soldiers who came from the sea, and those who fell from the sky. The men who didn’t even make it as far as the beach, the ones who got captured, those still fighting on more than a year later, and those who can tell us directly what it was like.

You will see Stan Hollis’ VC on display in our Medal Room as part of the exhibition.
