A note on the letters. The transcripts may include abbreviations or spelling inconsistencies and errors. We have chosen to transcribe the letters as they appear so that they are an accurate reflection of John Oldfield’s style and personality. We have also included his original page numbering. Where language is used that we would deem offensive, those words have been replaced with XXX.

Dearest Mum, Daddy & Jumbo – Hope so much that by the now you may have had all my letters. Yours come through well – I am glad to say. The latest date I have had is 27 Sept from you, form wh. I gather all is well at Castle O. and the horses out for work for keep. I have also heard from Margaret L. this week – who seems just the same except for the fact that she prefers Richard! also from Anne Smales including 2 v. nice snaps of her and her “Galloway” – please give her my love and thank her. Peter Lindrea who was my 2Y’ has just returned to England – I thought you might like to get in touch with him so are sending his ‘people’s address – LINDREA, “Savernake” Cote Drive, Durdham Down, Bristol 9. He might well be post to the depot and I should like you to meet him. My love to Biddy – I am still no wiser as to why she is in Liverpool. Performed at a recent concert on my violin. Had a game of cricket to-day which I enjoyed. What a terrible schoolboy’s letter this is! Your photographs are splendid and I am looking forward to more. I saved Hunting News from the week and a few of us are having an “open meet” on Nov. 1st – we have everything but hounds and anywhere to hunt. Just Oct.12 – why not have Will L and Mike over for a weekend? I will write again next wk. All my love and Godbless, Johnnie.
