Today marks the 80th anniversary of the death of Hedley Verity – Yorkshire and England cricketer and who served with the Green Howards during the Second World War.
Verity was wounded and captured on 19 July during the regiment’s action as part of Operation Husky in Sicily in 1943. He died in hospital on the Italian mainland on 31 July.
We shared Hedley Verity’s story with young cricketers at Richmondshire Cricket Club to mark the anniversary.
