“Give me a native regiment to organise, a rebellion to raise, a map to make”, implored Mark Sykes whilst languishing in a dead-end military job in Ireland.

Look at a map of the Middle East and you’ll see the perfectly straight lines of national borders.  In 1916, Sir Mark Sykes, who served with the Green Howards, helped decide the fate of millions of people in this regions.  Find out about the man variously described as impulsive, daring and romantic, and the ongoing repercussions of those fateful lines drawn in the sand.
