From Normandy to the Elbe

Thu, 11 July 2024 7pm

In our Museum Talk, From Normandy to the Elbe, we tell the story of what happened AFTER D Day.

From 6 June 1944 to 30 April 1945, the Green Howards were in the vanguard of the fight to start the task of building a new world.

The Green Howards had endured two months of fighting in Normandy.  Their next part in the liberation of Europe would see them disentangled from the hedges and ditches of the French countryside to fight in a more mobile war. They would cross the battlefields of Belgium, places whose names would have been familiar to their First World War contemporaries.

Then on through Holland, battling to cross the Albert Canal and operations in support of the attacks on Nijmegen, before moving on into Germany itself to eventually cross the Elbe river just south of Hamburg.

Museum Talk tickets £5. Booking essential. Call 01748 826561.
