20 October 2007   OFFICIAL PRESENTATION OF THE SILVER TIGER   On the 18th October, Brigadier Ronnie Eccles DSO, who commanded the 1st Battalion from 1969-72 during the first two tours in Northern Ireland, officially presented the York and Lancaster silver tiger statuette to Major General Andrew Farquhar CBE in the Normanby Room.
20 October 2007   NEW SHOP MANAGER FOR THE MUSEUM   On the 8th October, the Trustees appointed Janet Nelson as the new Shop Manager and Receptionist at the Green Howards Museum.

28 September 2007   MALAYAN VETERAN TRAVELS 4,000 MILES TO MEET FORMER COMRADES   A Green Howards veteran of the Malayan Emergency of 1949 to 1952 has travelled more than 4,000 miles from his home in Canada to meet former comrades.

27 September 2007   DEAD MAN’S MEDAL PICTURE HELPS GREEN HOWARDS REMEMBER TWO VCs   The Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond is this year marking the 150th anniversary of the presentation of its first two Victoria Crosses, to two men who fought in the Crimean War.

26 July 2007   MUSEUM BUYS PALESTINE HERO’S GEORGE CROSS   A very rare inter-war George Cross has been bought at auction by the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond, with the help of a grant from the Victoria & Albert Museum.
18 July 2007   GREEN HOWARD HAS SPECIAL TOUR OF MUSEUM   A former Green Howards officer from Ripon has been given a special tour of his Regimental Museum to mark his determination that the badge of his former Regiment should be placed in the new Chapel of Justice and Peace in Ripon Cathedral.

28 June 2007   COLONEL TONY WILSON AWARDED OBE IN QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOURS LIST   Colonel Tony Wilson has been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, after wearing the Queen’s uniform for over 50 years.

28 June 2007   FAMILIES MAKE GENEROUS DONATIONS TO THE MUSEUM   The Museum has recently received several extremely generous donations from families who have relatives who served with the Green Howards.

18 June 2007   RIFLE DONATION HELPS COMPLETE MUSEUM COLLECTION   A rifle of the type used by Green Howards during the Tirah Campaign of 1897 and in the Boer War has been presented to the Regimental Museum in Richmond by a supporter from Darlington.

19 May 2007   THE OPENING OF THE REFURBISHED GREEN HOWARDS MUSEUM, - 18th MAY 2007   Over 70 members of the Green Howards Association, VIPs and guests attended the opening of the new ground floor of the Museum on the evening of the 18th May.

14 July 2006   CURATOR "STOLEN" FROM POLICE MUSEUM   David Tetlow (aged 36 yrs) from Manchester has swopped the blue and silver police colours for the white and green of the local infantry regiment. 30 June 2006   SIR BERNARD INGHAM AND "YORKSHIRE GREATS" AT THE FRIENDS AGM   Sir Bernard Ingham, the former Press Secretary to Margaret Thatcher, had over 90 Friends chuckling and laughing out loud at the eccentricities and foibles of some of the famous personalities from Yorkshire he had chosen for his best selling book ‘Yorkshire Greats’.

8 June 2006   HOLLIS VC HUT - MISTAKEN BEACH PILLBOX NOW ‘D’ DAY MEMORIAL   A train stop on a Normandy beach, mistaken for a German pillbox on D. Day, has been unveiled as a memorial to Company Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis VC and the men of the Green Howards who stormed ashore 62 years ago during the allied landings on 6 June 1944.

6 June 2006   AMALGAMATION   After 318 years, the oldest English independent infantry of the line regiment was amalgamated today into the new, large Yorkshire Regiment, whilst the 1st Battalion was on operations in Bosnia and Kosovo.

2 June 2006   COLONEL OF REGIMENT SAYS FAREWELL TO HIS REGULAR BATTALION   The Colonel of The Green Howards, Brigadier J S W Powell OBE recently visited the 1st Battalion The Green Howards at their operational base in Banja Luka, Bosnia.

1 June 2006   THE RICHMOND DRUMMER BOY WALKS AGAIN   11 years old Hughie Nicholson donned a replica uniform of a 1750s drummer boy from the Museum in order to lead visitors on the annual Richmond Drummer Boy Walk last Sunday (28 May).

22 May 2006   100 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG   Tommy Sivell from Newcastle-upon-Tyne cut his 100th Birthday cake with a sword at The Green Howards Richmond Sunday celebrations on 21st May.
11 May 2006   TERRIERS DEPLOYED IN IRAQ ON OP TELIC 7   The Green Howard cap badge has been on display over the last six months in Iraq for the last time before amalgamation.

05 May 2006   SERGEANT JIMMY WILLIS SWAPS MAGIC MOMENTS IN THE GREEN HOWARDS AT THE NORTHERN MAGIC CIRCLE BRANCH MEETING   TV celebrity and ‘It’s Magic’ compère Paul Daniels (National Service in Hong Kong 1957-59) met another Green Howard magician at the Northern Magic Circle Branch Meeting this week and got a surprise.

23 April 2006   GREEN HOWARDS FIND SUCCESS ON BALKANS RETURN   It is almost 10 years to the day that the Green Howards were last deployed on operations to Bosnia. Two Corporals from the 1st Battalion marked the Regiment's return within days of the unit's arrival with a significant illegal weapons find.

19 March 2006   GREEN HOWARDS' DINNER SAYS FAREWELL TO THE KING OF NORWAY   One of England's oldest Army regiments, and one of only two never to have been amalgamated, has said farewell to its Colonel-in-Chief, HM Harald V, King of Norway, after an association with his family extending back to 1875.

13 February 2006   TEMPORARY EXHIBITION - 'Green Howards Over The Somme - 1916', - NOW OPEN   To mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme (July-November 1916), The Green Howards Museum opened a temporary display about those Green Howards who flew with the Royal Flying Corps over the Western Front trenches in The Great War.

30 January 2006   A NEW TOUCH SCREEN MEDAL INTERPRETATION DISPLAY IN THE MUSEUM   A special touch screen unit has been unveiled in the Harrison Gallery (Medal Room) in the Green Howards Regimental Museum.

24 January 2006   THE GREEN HOWARDS OFFICERS' BALL, - HARROGATE, 21 JANUARY 2006   It was a night to remember. Almost 300 officers and their wives or partners approached the Pavilions in Harrogate through a laser tunnel of green light, with a large XIX revolving on the wall above.


23 January 2006   THE MUSEUM TO RE-OPEN, - WITH A NEW TOUCH SCREEN MEDAL INTERPRETATION DISPLAY   The Green Howards Regimental Museum is to reopen to the public next Wednesday, 1 February, after the annual month long closure for cleaning and maintenance.

15 December 2005   SECOND GREEN HOWARDS OFFICER TO BECOME CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF   General Sir Richard Dannatt KCB CBE MC, formerly Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards from 1989 to 1991 and Colonel of the Regiment from 1994 to 2003, is to become Chief of the General Staff (CGS) in August 2006.

1 December 2005   CHRISTOPHER FINDS GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S GALLANTRY MEDAL   Eleven-year-old Christopher Chapman from Gainford Primary School in County Durham was on a mission when he visited the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond on Tuesday 29 November - to see if he could find the medals won by his great-grandfather in World War I.

2 December 2005   GREEN HOWARDS SOLDIERS' CAREERS GET A LIFT   Three Green Howards soldiers have had a lift to their future careers - by becoming fully-qualified forklift operators while serving with the 1st Battalion The Green Howards at their base in Chepstow.

22 November 2005   FIVE GREEN HOWARDS TEAMS IN MILITARY COMPETITION   Five teams, one from each Company of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards, have taken part in the Cambrian Patrol competition, one of the world's toughest military skills competitions, which took place in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.

8 November 2005   GREEN HOWARDS PLAY MAJOR ROLE IN ARMISTICE DAY SERVICE AT ROYAL ARMOURIES   Green Howards who have been killed since the end of World War Two will be remembered at the Armistice Day Service on 11 November at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, which will also mark the last time that the Green Howards remembers its dead as an independent regiment.

  Canadian Sarah Taylor is hard at work in the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond as its newly-appointed Collections and Audience Development Officer - and has already got to grips with the Regiment's important photographic collection.
26 October 2005   PALACE DATE FOR LAST GREEN HOWARD IN WARTIME NORWAY   Old Green Howards soldier Frederick Leach from South Bank in Middlesbrough was at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 25 October to meet the King of Norway, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment, at a reception to mark the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Norway.

26 October 2005   MUSEUM CALLS FOR WORLD WAR I ITEMS TO HELP SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

  A call has gone out from the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond for donations of World War I items that can be sent out to local schools that are studying the War.

5 October 2005   IRA VICTIM'S CRICKET CUP PRESENTED BY NEPHEW, BATTALION'S CO   The cup for the best Green Howards Company cricket team, named The Willis Cup in memory of Major Peter Willis, a Company Commander with the Green Howards who was blown up and killed by the IRA in South Armagh in July 1975, has been handed to this year's winning team by his nephew, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Willis MBE, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion.
     
   
20 September 2005   ARMY'S LAST FIELD MARSHAL HEADS UNIQUE REGIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPH   Eighteen ranks of serving soldiers, from Field Marshal to Private, all of them Green Howards, came together in a unique photograph at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, on MONDAY 19 SEPTEMBER.

20 September 2005   KEN’S 1944 GREEN HOWARDS DIARY COMES TO MUSEUM 61 YEARS ON   Sixty-one years ago, on 24 September 1944, Lieutenant Ken Taylor of the Green Howards crossed the Nijmegen Bridge in Holland, under attack from German aircraft, two and a half months after landing on the Normandy beaches on D-Day - and he recorded his experiences in an ‘illegal’ wartime diary.

18 June 2005   WORLD WAR ONE HERO’S MEDALS COME TO MUSEUM   The medals of a World War I member of the Green Howards who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for rescuing his brother-in-law while under enemy fire at Armentières in northern France, and later won the Military Medal (MM), have been presented to the Regimental Museum in Richmond.

7 June 2005   WORLD WAR I PRISONER'S SOAP COME TO REGIMENTAL MUSEUM   Artificial soap from a World War One German prisoner-of-war camp has been presented to the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond by Peter Etches, whose father Bede saved it on his return from the war.
2 June 2005   GREEN HOWARDS GIVEN LONG SERVICE MEDALS   Green Howards Colour Sergeant Shaun Flynn, from Linthorpe in Middlesbrough, and Corporal Graham Anderson, from Billingham, have been presented with a Long Service and Good Conduct medals at a ceremony in the 1st Battalion's headquarters in Chepstow.

7 December 2004   NEW ROLE AND PROMOTION FOR FORMER COLONEL OF THE REGIMENT   The former Colonel of the Regiment of the Green Howards, Lieutenant General Sir Richard Dannatt KCB CBE MC has been appointed Commander-in-Chief Land Command from March next year, and is to be promoted to the rank of General. 21 September 2004   GREEN HOWARDS REMEMBER THE ALMA 150 YEARS ON   One hundred and fifty years ago, on 20 September 1854, the Green Howards were in the thick of the Battle of the Alma, one of the earliest of the major engagements of the Crimean War - and they have marked the Battle's anniversary with ceremonies wherever they have been stationed.

23 June 2004   GREEN HOWARDS OVERSEE OPENING OF NEW BRIDGE IN AFGHANISTAN   A dangerous bridge linking two villages near the Afghan capital Kabul, used by more than 500 local children going to and from school each day, has been replaced with the help of the Green Howards.

06 June 2004   SISTER OF 7th BATTALION D-DAY HERO SEES HIS PORTRAIT AND JOURNAL IN THE MUSEUM   On 6 June the Friends of the Green Howards Regimental Museum organised a Lecture on D-Day given by Keith Matthews, Curator of the Castle Museum in York. The Lecture was held in the Normanby Room of the Museum.
A guest at the Lecture was Miss Lavender Wilson, whose brother, - Captain Gordon M Wilson, served with the 7th Battalion Green Howards.

24 May 2004   ARMED FORCES MINISTER MEETS GREEN HOWARDS IN AFGHANISTAN   The Green Howards in Afghanistan hosted the Armed Forces Minister, the Rt Hon Adam Ingram MP, on his visit to the country in late April.
The Minister was in the country meeting soldiers serving throughout Afghanistan. In the capital Kabul he met members of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards who are contributing to the UK team which is helping to train
the Afghan National Army.

26 April 2004   NEW GREEN HOWARDS ARE CONGRATULATED BY GENERAL – AND HEAD FOR AFGHANISTAN   Three new Green Howards soldiers have completed their training with a Passing Out parade at Catterick – then were personally congratulated by another Green Howard, Lieutenant General Richard Dannatt CBE MC, who took the salute.

22 April 2004   GREEN HOWARDS HELP TRAIN AFGHAN ARMY   Green Howards soldiers are helping the Afghan National Army to train as part of their work in the Afghan capital Kabul.
Major Chris Harrison, whose family lives in the Bootham area of York, and whose home is now at Huggate near Pocklington, is in Afghanistan as Officer Commanding Support Company, 1st Battalion The Green Howards.

20 April 2004   D-DAY HERO’S VC IN IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM EXHIBITION   The Victoria Cross of Green Howards Sergeant Major Stan Hollis – the only one to be awarded for actions on D-Day – is on show in a major exhibition at London’s Imperial War Museum to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion that led to the end of World War II.

18 April 2004   GREEN HOWARDS SOLDIER AWARDED CALVERT CUP FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE   A Redcar soldier has been presented with a special award as the outstanding junior non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the Green Howards.
Corporal Frank Kenyon (28) has been awarded the Calvert Memorial Trophy for 2003.

18 April 2004   GREEN HOWARDS HELP WITH AFGHAN RECONSTRUCTION   Green Howards soldiers are out and about in Afghanistan helping local people cope with the reconstruction of the country.
Captain Wayne Pledger from Scarborough and Sergeant Chris Gent from Guisborough are taking part in CIMIC (Civil-Military Co-operation) tasks that include helping to deliver drugs and food packages to the children’s ward in Kabul’s Maywand General Hospital, and clothing and food – as well as sports equipment – to Rahman Mena Girls’ School.

To mark the anniversary a new book that uses contemporary diaries and memoirs of Green Howards soldiers – and a wife - to trace the course of the conflict has been written by the Curator of the Green Howards Regimental Museum, Major Roger Chapman.

28 January 2004   D-DAY VETERAN OPENS EXHIBITION AT GREEN HOWARDS MUSEUM   The commander of one of the first Green Howards companies to go ashore on D-Day, 6 June 1944, officially opened a special exhibition at the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond on Monday 9 February to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

07 February 2004   26 MACHINE-GUN WOUNDS – AND NOW HIS MEDALS COME TO REGIMENTAL MUSEUM   The medals of a Green Howards soldier who survived twenty-six machine-gun bullets in his leg and groin have been presented by his son to the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond.

28 January 2004   GREEN HOWARDS RETURN TO AFGHANISTAN AFTER 85 YEARS   Officers from the 1st Battalion The Green Howards have just returned from a reconnaissance in Afghanistan, to prepare the way for the Battalion’s six-month deployment in the country later this year.

21 January 2004   VC HERO’S SON SEES MUSEUM’S NEW D-DAY EXHIBITION   The son of the only man to win the Victoria Cross on D-Day has visited the Green Howards Museum in Richmond to see the preparations for a new exhibition that will depict D-Day and the Regiment’s role in the operation.

  Members of the Green Howards Regimental Recruiting Team have been lending their skills to a project that is helping young people from East Cleveland learn valuable skills for the future.

  When local radio station TFM found they had a special Christmas problem, they called on the Green Howards for assistance.
The radio station, which is helping the charity 'Make a Child Smile', has appealed to its listeners to donate toys for local children who would otherwise be without presents this Christmas.

  The death of a 19-year old Green Howards Soldier from Bedale in 1915 is helping to bring the realities of the Great War to 13-year old students from Richmond School.

  Local soldiers will be back on the streets of Middlesbrough for the week beginning Monday 24 November, when the Green Howards Recruiting Team is in the city to encourage others to join the Regiment.

  Gurkhas visiting the Green Howards Museum in Richmond were shown the only Victoria Cross to be won on D-Day by some one who knows their country and traditions well.
