The Green Howards Regimental Museum is extremely fortunate to be in the possession of several diaries and service journals maintained by soldiers on active service.   Some of these diaries are in their original manuscript handwriting, and, as such, provide a unique testimony to some remarkable men.

The works below have been transcribed from the original manuscripts.   Original spellings and grammar are mostly left intact.   The transcriptions have then been transferred into the environment of the World Wide Web for dissemination to a wider audience.

The Service Journal of Sergeant Charles Usherwood is in two parts;-
The first part of Sergeant Charles Usherwood's Journal covers his service in the Crimean War and provides a vivid eyewitness description of service in the Crimea.

The second part of the Service Journal of Sergeant Charles Usherwood, describes his service with the 19th Foot in India between 1857 and 1862.

The Diary of Job Shepherd Waterhouse describes the service of Sergeant Waterhouse with the 19th Foot in India between 1864 and 1870

With respect to the above two works, the 19th Foot served in India between 1857 and 1871. If you would like to find out more about the history of British India, you might like to visit Cathy Day's Web Site.
This particular site includes histories of regiments which served in British India, together with other diaries and accounts.

Two diaries kept by serving soldiers during the BOER WAR (1899 - 1902) have been transcribed and are now placed on this Web site.   The original diaries are in the possession of the Green Howards Museum.
The Diary of Private John Jackson describes the service life of an ordinary soldier during the Boer War from October 1899 until September 1900. Private Jackson fought with the Green Howards in South Africa.

Corporal F.W.Schofield maintained a diary covering his service between 1899 and 1901.   This diary includes accounts both of the daily life of a soldier at the time, and of the battles fought by the Green Howards in the war.

The Green Howards website is delighted to be able to host the "The War of a Green Howard, 1939-1945. Bill Cheall's Story"
This is a 24 chapter account of the war service of a Green Howard who fought with the 6th Battalion, seeing action at Dunkirk, Egypt, Sicily, and D-Day.

Bill Cheall was wounded one month after D-Day, but continued to serve in the army once he had recuperated.
His story is fascinating, and moving. The reader is thoroughly recommended to visit these pages.

Additonally, the Green Howards website has also been granted permission to host the Diary of Kenneth Taylor which was written between June and December 1944. This describes service in the 6th Battalion from D-Day through to action in Belgium and Germany by Captain Taylor. We are privileged to be able to host this diary, as it provides an extraordinary account of service with the Green Howards in that period of history.
