We would like to make it clear that the Museum of the Green Howards in Richmond does not carry out research on behalf of private individuals.   If you have any specific enquiries, we will be happy to try and answer them.   However, with many thousands of personnel having served with the Regiment over the past two centuries or so, it becomes an extremely difficult task to answer a large number of semi-specific enquiries.   Please try and find out as much as possible about the soldier concerned BEFORE directing any queries in the way of the this website or the Museum.

It is also important to realise that if you do ask us to carry out any research in connection with the Green Howards, or somebody who has served in the Green Howards, we have to make a charge for this service.

If you are just starting out, and are NEW TO FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH, you may care to read some of the advice which is provided on this web site BEFORE contacting us. If so, please select the link immediately below.

New to Family History Research ?

If you have some experience, even if limited, and have some information on your ancestor you will need to provide the following (AS A MINIMUM) before we can help you;-
Army Number
Rank
Battalion served in. and
Dates of Service
.
You may find some of these details on the rim or reverse of the campaign medals, if you have them.   However, it is more than likely that you will have to conduct some research using public records in order to obtain this information. This Web site provides guidance on conducting this research, or you might like to try some of the links below for useful addresses, web sites, and contacts.

If you have the above necessary information, the staff at the Green Howards Museum may then be able to conduct some further research.

There is no guarantee that there are any records or photographs of the ancestor or relative you might be researching.

Research Application Form

If you would like the Museum to carry out research on your behalf please use the Research Application Form and post this (with your remittance) to the Museum at the address shown on the form. Please make sure that you have read the Condtions and Advice provided with this form BEFORE you submit it.

The Research Application Form is provided in Adobe PDF format. If you do not have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader on your PC, which is required for reading PDF files, it may be downloaded free of charge from Adobe.

Useful Addresses, Web Sites, and Contacts.

To help find out more about your ancestor or relative, a page is provided which provides the addresses of some useful organisations which may assist you in your research.

We have also provided you with a number of useful addresses on the World Wide Web, to provide guidance and a starting point for your research.

There is a page linking to Family History Case Studies.   Research into the lives of men who served and fought with the Regiment throughout its history are presented here.   The stories illustrate some of the work needed to carry out research into an ancestor's military career, and how the resources of the Museum - together with other records - were utlised.

Finally, there are two excellent guide books for those carrying out research into the military history of an ancestor or a relative;-
Army Records for Family Historians by Simon Fowler published by the Public Records Office

and

Tracing your Family History - Army issued by the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1 6HZ

Both books are invaluable resourses to help in such research.
